The first impression can be proven to be fleeting in baseball, but it is better than the impression of poverty. As First Impression grew, the early days of Boston Red Sox rookie Connelly Early were definitely explosives. In his debut, he splurged 11 A-based batsmen early on and with a small handful of free throws and exited the game with a 5-0 lead, never threatened.
Even in an era of three-pointers, 11 of 21 bats were impressive. In fact, the Red Sox had the most pitchers in their major league debuts, with 11 strikeouts ranking Don Aase as the most, and Early Years marks the most of five-inning rookie debuts ever. And it is not done in a particularly simple environment. The Red Sox is a playoff team that could win Al East and get extremely valuable first-round goodbye, which will give injured players like Roman Anthony more time to return. Although track and field is one of the worst records in the American League, the responsibility for this dilemma falls primarily on the pitchers, not on the early roster. Early WHIFF rates didn’t even require the “Major League debut” qualifier. The 58.7% contact rate is great for any starter, with the check-in at about the 97th percentile in all starts in 2025 (135 out of 4,350 starts).
Even at the end of last month, the Red Sox decided to actively promote Payton Tolle, I was still surprised to say that he had just started six times in Worcester as soon as he had been so quickly. But, in hindsight, maybe I shouldn’t have been that way, or not. Although the number of games is still a relatively small sample, there are not many artifacts, and in the last four games before his promotion, Triple-A’s early WIF rate has increased rapidly. It is an impressive short-term development to get opponents’ contact rate down from 81% to 73% to 70% to 57%.
Now, improvements can still be improved in some areas, and doing so will help maintain the feeling of love at first sight, which many Red Sox fans undoubtedly like today. In the early prospects, command has been a problem, with some signs on Tuesday. A didn’t punish some really frustrating middle-class foursome, especially in the first inning, where his control didn’t meet his usual standards. From early and Tolle’s success opens up more options for the Red Sox in the playoffs. Tanner Houck’s elbow surgery ended any slim chance he had returned in the second half of the year, and the Kutter Crawford season has been over for some time. Dustin May has elbow neuritis, and while he can return, his status is uncertain. Without rookie call, Boston’s October rotation will feature Garrett crochet, with two solid starters in Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito. It’s not a bad group, but if the Red Sox needs to turn to a fourth starter or fill the injury, then depth is very lacking. If both early and Thor finally proved that they belonged to the extended Grand Slams – I think there’s a good chance they would, then the playoffs guys don’t look like Swiss cheese.
Zips’ evaluation rotation in the playoffs is different from the regular season because you get more innings from the top of the rotation. If you remove early and consider Tolle, Zips casts the Red Sox to the 19th-largest spin in baseball, and when you force the computer to enter “playoff mode.” With early and Thor’s efforts, they rose to 11th place, and several teams with better staff will completely miss the playoffs (twins, Buccaneers), or at least look like long shots (red).
Will Connelly continue to add double-digit whip as soon as possible? Probably not. But his 2025 season has been a long Boston spin for him, and he has provided him with a solid reason even without knowing his major league debut. The major league debut was one of the best games I’ve seen in a long time.
