NHL Rumors: Pittsburgh Penguin and Boston Brown Bear

Surprisingly, the Pittsburgh Penguins didn’t move a few more players during the offseason
Josh Yohe: The Pittsburgh Penguins have missed the playoffs in the past three seasons and no one expects them to be successful this season. Over the past few years, GM Kyle Dubas has supplemented their prospects and added draft picks. They lack young star power and it is not easy to land if you draft from the top five.
Surprisingly, all Bryan Rust, Rickard Rakell and Erik Karlsson stayed with the Penguin. Mobile Rust and Rakell will receive significant returns for prospects, draft picks and/or young players. The deal either makes the Penguins worse, which will make them a better draft pick.
The Penguins have a cap of $13 million and are expected to be $53 million for the next offseason. Trade Rust, Rakell or Karlsson (even if retained) will give them more space. Kevin Hayes, Noel Acciari and Danton Heinen were less interested, and they made up $8 million and would be free agents after this season.
NHL Rumors: Flame, Maple Leaf, Hart, Ferraro and Hughes
The Penguins should seek tanks this season to better shoot better against Landing Gavin McKenna. They need to hit the bottom of the rock.
Mason McTavish will be an interesting business target for Boston Brown Bears
Conor Ryan of the Boston Globe: 2025 first-round pick, James Hagens, may be the first-tier center for the Boston Bruins in the future, but they need to provide more help in the middle. Elias Lindholm will eventually fall into the third line.
Jack Eichel hits the free agent impossible. Adding another top center is more likely to happen through a draft or a deal. Anaheim Duck Mason McTavish is an interesting trade target. If the conversation between the duck and Mctavish is everywhere, they might move the RFA center.
This could cost the Browns a first-round pick or two, as well as a prospect or young NHL player. The first trade in the 2026 draft could be a risky one, as the heavy bears could be in the top ten. If the Brown Bears can’t get Mctavish, he’s the kind of player GM Don Sweeney should be looking for.
