DJED SPENCE is not burdened by the thought of the first Muslim to play for England

DJED Spence insists that he is not about to be the first Muslim to play in England.

Tottenham Hotspur defenders were included in Thomas Tuchel’s roster to face international doubles titles against Andorra and Serbia, and could make their debut against the former on Saturday at Villa Park.

Spencer may be forgiven for increasing pressure at a time when religious and racial tensions in the country are intensifying, but the 25-year-old is only focused on live affairs.

“I really don’t feel the pressure on something. I just smiled and played football on my face, and was happy and the rest would take care of myself.”

“If I can do it, you can do it. Not only Muslim kids, children of any faith. Put your mind on something, you can do it.”

Asked about being the first Muslim to play for the Three Lions, he added: “It’s a blessing – it’s amazing. I really have no words.

“I pray a lot, and I want to thank God. During the hardest moments of my life, the darkest moments, I always believed that God was always by my side. It was a big deal for me, my faith.”

It took some time for the Spurs to break through

Spence was signed by the Spurs in 2022, but then-Antonio Conte seemed not to be impressed, calling it “a club investment.”

He was loaned to Rennes, Leeds and Girona before he finally gained the trust of Angel Postecoglou.

The Londoner started his first Tottenham against Southampton from December to 881 days after signing with the club – and did not look back, becoming Thomas Frank’s fixture in the early weeks of the new season.

He now hopes to shine on the international stage under Tuchel.

“For England, 100% of the game is definitely a big deal,” Spence said.

“The manager made me feel comfortable, and everyone here made me feel comfortable. I also played under 21 so I know more. But the senior level, I haven’t done it before. The boy made me feel welcome and took me in.”
