Fangraphs is recruiting! Seeking full-time potential writers

Fangraphs is now accepting applications to join our staff as full-time prospects.
Leads will work with major prospect Eric Longenhagen and other Fangraphs employees to develop the organization’s top lead list, amateur draft coverage, and other minor leagues and prospect-related content. Successful candidates will be able to evaluate potential customers using face-to-face appearance, video scouting and data. Familiarity and comfort of advanced statistics is a requirement, prior reconnaissance or prospect assessment experience and a firm understanding of minor league landscapes. It is also important that we are looking for a writer who can produce our own ideas, produce lively and engaging prose, and detail what makes the prospect good (or bad) good (or bad) in an educational, accurate and interesting way to read.
Key Responsibilities
- Products independent and collaborating with other prospective writers, the highest prospect list, with approximately 1,500 scout reports per year
- Create written reports and player PERF lists based on face-to-face appearance and video reconnaissance and related data
- Contributing to the website’s amateur talent report
- Production of other prospect-related content throughout the year
- Assist in maintaining the board of directors
- Assisted trade deadline and transaction scope
- Other writing assigned
Skill
Minimum skill:
- Experience in advance reconnaissance or prospect assessment
- Very familiar with modern baseball statistics and minor leagues and amateur baseball landscapes
- Familiar with the reconnaissance scale
- Sharp details and high standards of accuracy and clarity
- Ability to work on a certain weekend and evening as required by the baseball calendar and news cycle. The position also requires regular travel, as well as key scouting events and display matches.
- Ability to develop scouts and other baseball operation contacts for relevant information and data
- Basic abilities and familiarity with G-Suite, email and slack
- University degree or equivalent
Expected skills:
- Familiar with Synergysports or other video reconnaissance platforms
- Guide to familiarize yourself with SABR styles
- Experience in multimedia production/editing
- Experience working in WordPress CMS
This is a full-time, paid position and has benefits. Since Fangraphs is a web-based company, there is no need to relocate. As long as you have reliable internet access and are willing to work during sober time for American readers, although you are willing to do this in most geographical locations, even though it is a strong advantage to be close to a minor league branch or a large conference academy facility. - Sample report assessing the prospects of two batsmen and two pitchers. You can choose players, but at least two of them should be in the lower tier of minors. These evaluations should approximate the reports you might see in the list of Fangraphs’ top leads and come with relevant tool levels. For the purposes of this exercise, if you are most used to it, you can use reconnaissance scales (i.e., B2, C1, etc.) other than future values (i.e., B2, C1, etc.). Please describe the source of information you used when compiling the report.
- You think other samples of your written work will give us a sense of sound and perspective on the game.
