Sergio Garcia exits event after heartbreak in Ryder Cup

Sergio Garcia hopes to be one of six captain draft picks for European captain Luke Donald on Monday. Donald, who was elected as 11 of 11 of 12 members in the 2023 Ryder Cup champions, did not join Rasmus Hojgaard, who automatically qualified the team, replacing his twin brother Nicolai.
Garcia missed the team game with his fate of the Ryder Cup blocked the Irish Open at K Club this week to handle the disappointment.
“I feel like I’m looking forward to being part of that team, so I feel like it’s mentally and it’s a little bit hard,” Garcia told Golfmagic. “I didn’t want to go there, nor did I want to be fully involved in the game and stuff, so I just decided to spend a little time with my family and do a few things, you know, something is something outside of golf and then restart a little and recharge the battery.”
The 45-year-old Garcia is the Ryder Cup point leader in European history, but does not seem to be seriously considered by Donald’s team. Garcia won Liv Hong Kong in March but finished with just two top ten in the last 10 events off the league schedule. His best result in the Grand Slam was the Open T34.
Why the 2025 Ryder Cup starts earlier than you think

Garcia played in 10 consecutive Ryder Cups before missing out on 2023 after defecting from Liv Golf. In April 2023, the DP World Tour won a legal battle with Liv Golf, and the arbitration panel agreed that DP World Tour might sanction members of the game release policy that violates its conflict. Shortly after the DP World Tour announced, 16 of the 17 players who left Lev paid the fine, noting that Garcia was the only one who refused to do so. The Spaniard then resigned from his membership, leaving him ineligible for the Ryder Cup.
Garcia paid a fine last November and regained a member of the DP World Tour, which put him in good shape on the European Tour and gave him a path to Donald’s 2025. However, after winning T67 in the PGA Championship, Garcia was not optimistic about his chances of becoming a team because his game was in a bad state at the time.
“Even if Luke now gives me a draft pick, even if Luke now gives me a draft pick,” Garcia said at Quail How. “Obviously, I need to get better. I need to get more positions before the Masters. You know, just show yourself and show everyone that I have a solid game, it helps the European team. It’s simple.”
However, the song changed at the Open Championships held in Royal Protush. Garcia has pointed out several times over the past year that he and Donald had a “chat” about his return to the Ryder Cup. In Northern Ireland, Garcia pointed out his Ryder Cup experience as something the team could use in Bethpage Black. He thought it was the feather of his hat.
“I think I can bring things to the team – any team that might need it,” Garcia said. “At the end of the day, having an experienced guy put their arms around you when you’re taking a class makes you feel like you don’t have to worry about it, and it’s great when people yell, scream and wish you all the bad things you could think of. Yes. [Parnevik] In 99 [at Brookline] As a rookie. He was easy for me. Obviously, we did a great job, but he made me very fun and it was easy for me to really enjoy the moment and enjoy the Ryder Cup, even as tough as the crowd. ”
Then, there is Jon Rahm.
Rahm was one of Donald’s six captain draft picks on Monday, along with Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Åberg and Matt Fitzpatrick. During the 2021 Ryder Cup, Ram and Garcia teamed up in the whistling strait. They were the only highlight in Europe, with a 19-9 loss of 3-0-0.
Garcia hopes to reignite the possibility that the explosive pairing is in his favor.
“You would think so,” Garcia was asked if his partnership with Ram would be beneficial in Bert Patch. “Jon and I are good friends. When we were playing in the Whistle Channel game. I was watching some YouTube videos during the game there this week. We had a great time. We were happily gathering together. Obviously, it was easy to play with Jon because he was great.
Garcia told Golfmagic that his phone with Donald was “good” but “not the one he wanted to call.”
Donald will bring Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, Robert MacIntyre, Tyrrell Hatton, Rasmus Hojgaard, Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka, Viktor Hovland, LudvigÅberg, Jon Rahm and Matt Fitzpatrick to Bethpage Black.
The Ryder Cup begins on September 26.
