Angela Mortimer Barrett: Wimbledon champion died in 1961 at the age of 93

Angela Mortimer Barrett, the British Wimbledon women’s singles champion in 1961, died at the age of 93.

Mortimer Barrett was born in Plymouth and won three Grand Slam singles titles, one of which was a doubles title at Anne Shilcock of Wimbledon in 1955.

Her other Grand Slam singles champions were won at the 1955 French Championships and the 1958 Australian Championships, and she finished second on Wimbledon in 1958 when American Althea Gibson defeated her in the final.

Mortimer Barrett faced many challenges throughout her career, including hearing loss, and she fought a troubled tennis elbow case before a win-winning 1961 Wimbledon run, ending in the final with her defeat of Briton Christine Truman 4-6 6-4 6-4 7-5.

She was known as Angela Mortimer when she won the Grand Slam and married British tennis player John Barrett in 1967, becoming an outstanding tennis writer and broadcaster.

Mortimer Barrett was also awarded an MBE in 1967 for providing services to tennis.
