Oriole officially announced Samuel BasalloThe contract was extended at a press conference yesterday, with Basallo, GM Mike Elias and team chairman/CEO David Rubenstein attending several players. Among many topics involved, Rubenstein hopes to make such events quite regular, as the owners show interest in expanding more members of the Oriole’s young core.
“The Oriole’s ownership group is very capitalized and we have the resources to complete such transactions,” Rubenstein told Steve Melosky and other journalists.This requires two deals, but we think it is a perfect deal, for the first category of this type…. We have a lot of other talented people who we hope we will eventually want to spend our entire career here or want to spend a long-term arrangement with us. We are committed to doing more things as soon as possible. ”
The Basallo deal represents an interesting turning point for a more or less long-term extension, under former owner Peter Angelos, the long-term extension. As MLBTR’s contract tracker points out, Adam JonesThe six-year extension, which began in May 2012, is the last long-term extension signed by the Oriole. Other years of transactions over the past 13 years are short-term agreements covering arbitration years, in addition to the unusual situation of three-year renewal JJ Hardy Just in the 2014-15 offseason, he was just weeks before he was scored as a free agent.
Even though the Orioles have accumulated a wealth of young talents in recent reconstructions, expansion has not followed. Management can now point to Basallo’s expansion to prove the club’s willingness to maintain its cornerstone player position and spend the necessary money to implement these deals. As Elias said, negotiations began a week ago, on the same day, Basallo called his MLB debut from Triple-A, an example of the speed at which contract negotiation capabilities were upgraded.
Can more extensions be launched soon? Henderson did not comment on whether his camp had any talks with O’s but expressed his willingness to consider any offer and said “For me, the first thing is the team that wins. ”
Henderson’s price is about to rise sharply as shortstops enter the first of three arbitration years in the offseason. His career has seen Henderson Bank’s 8mm over 8mm, counting his minimum salary, receiving a 2.3mm signing bonus from the draft and about 3.4mm from the pre-preliminary prize pool. Between this financial guarantee and upgrading the ARB salary, Henderson may have made enough to be satisfied with his own bets, like many Bolas clients. While the remaining three years of control meant that the Orioles weren’t exactly ongoing Henderson’s gun, the closer he got to the open market, he would only get more expensive.
Adley Rutschman Also declined to comment on any extended conversations between his representatives at Wasserman and Orioles, just telling Baltimore Flag Danielle Allentuck and other journalists that he was pleased to see Basallo get paid off. The fact that O has made such a huge commitment to young catchers like Basallo naturally leads to speculation about the future of Rutschman and whether Basallo has replaced Rutschman as a long-term choice for the team.
As one would expect, now Orioles believe that Rutzmann and Barsalo have enough room to operate at the same time. Yesterday, interim manager Tony Mansolino told reporters (including Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Suns) that O’s O can take two players in the roster with the ability of the catcher/DH, otherwise Basallo could play the first base. “Sammy is so versatile, it will help a lot… Whenever you have two people who can catch up with high levels, in a major league team you have a huge advantage over those who don’t have one,” Mansorino pointed out.
Rutschman still has two arbitration years after the end of the 2027 season. As Weyrich points out, expanding a player who has achieved major league success is trickier than expanding a player like Basallo at the beginning of his career, so locking in Rutschman will represent another spending border with Rubenstein ownership group. Another question is whether the Orioles still think Razman deserves a long-term investment, considering how his numbers have fallen in the intraday decline in the past two seasons.
