Kraken hangs in McKen
McCann’s name appeared a few times throughout the summer, but it didn’t really appear, and there wasn’t a lot of chats. “There is no doubt that the New Jersey Devils are at least an NHL team by Seattle Cracken earlier this summer, and forward Jared McCann is not available,” reported Rob Simpson of Seattle Hockey insider.
McCann has been an integral part of Kraken since the expansion draft. He is an ice and ice leader, scoring over 100 goals in the past three seasons and has a lot of value in the league.

NHL advances in the 2028 World Cup without IIHF
The International Hockey Federation (IIHF) is responsible for almost all international hockey, world champions, world youth championships and the Olympics are the largest championships. The IIHF has no involvement with four countries that have succeeded with Uber, while Gary Bettman and the NHL have promised to return the Hockey World Cup, and Darren Dreger reportedly plans to move forward without the participation of IIHF.
Dreg also said the NHL will work directly with each hockey federation when sorting out the game. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly wrote the latest episode of 32 ideas and talked about upcoming plans.
The World Cup will be the mid-season championship in February 2028. It will consist of eight independent countries without a hybrid team (North America) and will have a host city in Europe, as well as one in North America. There are still some things to figure out, but Daly notes that there should be a formal announcement at the end of the season.
Updates to RFA and pending UFA extensions
Similarly, in the latest episode of 32 Ideas, Elliotte Friedman takes some quick notes on the upcoming 2026 free agents and the expansions some of them are expected to earn.
On Marco Rossi, Friedman said it would make sense for both sides to hope that it would be done before Rossi’s missing training camp or even the game moves. He said that while he wasn’t sure if Rossi stayed for the three-year period of the contract, it was the right choice when both the team and the players looked back at the deal.
As for Mason McTavish, Friedman said he saw some comments about McTavish and his camp disliked the Rossi deal, but he thought they were two very different situations. He said the duck really wanted him to stay with him, but they just couldn’t reach an agreement in many ways. Friedman refers to Anaheim Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek, Jeff Soloman, who handled the duck negotiations while McTavish’s agent Pat Morris was the “Grapper”, which is not surprisingly, it took longer.
On Connor Zary, he thinks the team and the players want to figure things out, but they have a different look at the contract.
With the upcoming 2026 unrestricted free agents, Friedman mentioned that now that players are starting to return to the city, there will be more opportunities to face and expand with the club. He mentioned Kirill Kaprizov and Wild, Minnesota, Jack Eichel and Vegas Golden Knights, Kyle Connor and Winnipeg Jets, Alex Tuch and Buffalo Sabers, and of course Connor McDavid and Edmonton Oilers. They will also wait to see which domino falls first and set it to the market for free agents of the New Wave, with an upward salary cap.
