Friends, Red Sox fans, fangraphs readers, bring me your ears,
I will analyze the contract extension, not to mourn.
The team despises life’s free agent status after them,
This kind of product is often fined by its luxury tax.

So let Anthony be with Anthony. The noble Red Sox
Hath tells you that Rafael Devers is ambitious.
If so, it would be a serious mistake.
The lineup answered it seriously.

Here, on Meg and others’ vacation,
Because they are glorious editors,
Come to ZIPS to speak at Anthony’s signing,
This is my computer, faithful, just me.

Although the Red Sox record is to get players out of free agents or trade their records before signing elsewhere, the organization is very active in signing players with limited service hours in order to buy free agents a few years in advance. Brayan Bello signed at least in 2030, at least if the club’s options are given a choice, while both Kristian Campbell and Ceddanne Rafaela are in arbitration, then in the club’s control in the 2030s. When the Red Sox acquired Garrett crochet, they also had no worries, ensuring he would extend the $170 million contract for six years to $170 million after a deal.

Now it’s Roman Anthony’s turn. The guaranteed portion of the contract requires $130 million over eight years, a total salary of $125 million in the 2023 campaign, and a $5 million acquisition on $30 million club options in 2034. If Red Sox chooses the option, the total value of the deal will be 9 years and $155 million. There is also a Halloween barrel full of incentives, and over the next nine years, Anthony can earn up to $230 million. However, this high-end number will be difficult to satisfy. As Masslive’s Chris Cotillo pointed out, in order to earn Anthony’s up to $230 million, he will have to finish the top two in the season’s rookie of the year, becoming the All-Star team for all eight seasons that were postponed and the option year, and won the next Nine MVP award, the extension of the season, plus the option season. No one has won nine MVPs. Barry Bonds has the most, with seven. So to hit every incentive in his new contract, Anthony will have to exaggerate the best baseball player of all time. If this happens, the Red Sox will get the biggest money ever, paying Anthony Rendon more than Angels.

It can be argued that even without incentives, it is a healthy change for players with two months of major league experience. Like Evan Longoria, who signed fewer major league services nearly 20 (!) years ago, Anthony brought in an extremely polished game that didn’t require much speculation. He already has excellent discipline on the plate and after only 19% of the off-zone swing in this year’s Triple-A, he’s only able to switch to 20% at 20% since being lifted. Neither the numbers are Joey Votto, and Juan Soto will be totally awkward, which is a very high bar.

There are some risks for a well-disciplined young player because there is a trap that leads to passiveness taking over, which leads to plate discipline becoming not a means of ending, but rather the ending itself. This is the career of players such as Jeremy Hermida and Ben Grieve. Indeed, Anthony swings on a relatively few courts in the strike zone, but when he gets what he wants, he real Following it, the average exit speed is 94 mph (95 mph for minors this year) and a 56.9% Statcast blow rate. He’s not just a “batting long” guy, as he’s also higher in the outfield position around the corner than defense, and although some teammates will cover him up on his feet, he’s quick.

All in all, he has hit .276/.392/.417 in the Grand Slams so far, with 1.5 wars in 47 games, which will result in any baseball team happy to welcome him on an active squad. Of course, his gaming field could hope to improve (74% exposure rate), but he has been a valuable member of the Red Sox. Anthony is one of the biggest zipper prediction differences, with its full version of the zipper being more aggressive than the seasonal model that pops up here every morning. But hey, I assure you the projection, so let’s swing.

By 2033, Zips said Anthony’s contract value was $135 million, split into less than $3 million during his ace season, $35 million during arbitration and $97 million in two free agent seasons. Therefore, the actual guaranteed value Anthony obtains is almost exactly what a computer deserves. However, the contract spit out the contract assumes that Anthony won’t finish in the top two of the Rookie of the Year votes, which will qualify him for one year of free agent before the extension (before the extension); in this case, to purchase another year of free agents, Zips will offer him an eight-year, $176 million extension.

That said, given his later debut and low home run total, I’m not sure if Anthony is likely to put first or second in the vote. Although it was a weak season for the rookie, Anthony needs to get all the support besides one of the following to end second: Nick Kurtz, Jacob Wilson, Will Warren, Noah Cameron and teammate Carlos Nawaz. I won’t stand out for Anthony’s fewer plate appearances and lower Triple Crown stats, and I dug up his high OBP and solid war, but even the average modern sports writer is less than me. (Also, I’m an NL voter.)

Since the announcement of the extension, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and others have tried to use Anthony’s deal as an alternative to Devers One, as if the team is using the money saved by trading Devers to pay Anthony for Anthony’s money to make him longer. However, I am not sure I buy it with either or proposition, because even Anthony’s expansion’s maximum value is less than the devers that Boston owe if not for the deal. Additionally, the Red Sox might find a way to extend Anthony without getting rid of Devers if they really want to do so. Still, the team’s long-term commitment to Anthony should make the Devers trade of Boston fans miserable, especially if the team continues to surge and play in depth in October. Now, the Red Sox has Roma Anthony, and the rest of the Al East has better found an octavian.
