Have a feeling. Then there is a feeling of forging
The Taylormade R&D team spent countless hours with the world’s best players and had learned that the wedge never feels soft enough.
That’s why the MG5 wedges that were completely forged with soft carbon steel for the first time ever. The forging process not only allows golfers to experience a soft feel around the green that needs the most, but also ensures consistency of the wedge from top to bottom.
The process begins with billet steel, which is heated and bent into an L-shaped shape. The work then goes through a rough forging process, trimming the excess material into which the wedges begin to form.
Next is the precise forging that begins to form with cosmetics and grinding. From there, grinding, face, grooves and Hoth styles are processed to ensure consistency and each wedge appears exactly the way it is designed.
The final step involves a lot of cosmetic details process to perfect the final product.
Compared to the MG4, the MG5 has refined cutting-edge curvature and newer top line fusion to a more symmetrical overall curve.
“Inspired by some feedback from Collin Morikawa, we set out to make the best feel of Wedge Taylormade ever. The best players will tell you that the green and green feeling is essential to be confident in your short game…and to have the best feeling and it needs to be forged.”

Saw wood groove

The MG5 wedge is the first wedge in the MG family to use aggressive zigzag grooves. The sawing process allows Taylormade designers to get closer to the legal limits of Groove geometry.
These grooves have been redesigned with ultra-tight tolerances, steep walls and clearer radii to help the MG5 produce more spin than previous MG generations.
Rotate and retain in wet conditions
Like previous MG generations, the MG5 wedge leverages original facial surface treatment and brand new continuous spin tread technology to help golfers maintain rotation and control in wet conditions.
Continuous rotating tread behaves like all-day tires on the road, they redirect the water and increase friction during impact.
With the rotation tread technology collaborating with the saw-bet groove, the MG5 rotates 13% more than the MG4 in wet conditions. These techniques also keep the emission angle more consistent between wet and dry conditions.
More golfers’ running-in options

With six different tour-inspired grindings, the MG5 wedge is made by Taylormade Master Wedge Craftsman Greg Cesario, and offers golfers a wide variety of options to suit their game.
Three of these grindings meet Taylormade’s standard bounce curves, and most golfers tend to: SB, SC, and SX Grinds.
SB Grind
The SB Grind features a complete sole design with a continuous trailing edge relief that provides smooth and consistent turf interactions compatible with most swing types.
This harsh and soft four-way inclination gives golfers who like to manipulate their faces more versatile.
Furthermore, the added unique width provides increased forgiveness, especially for golfers with steep swings. Most golfers find this wedge beneficial in almost all turf conditions.
SC mill
SC Grind is Taylormade’s iconic mid-box and soon became the top choice for employee club professionals.
The mid-low bounce design in the middle of the sole also comes with heels, toes and trailing edge relief.
The result is the ultimate green versatility designed for players who like to manipulate their faces in all turf conditions, while providing consistent all-around stability.
SX Grind
The SX Grind is a new grinding from the MG family, with the widest sole and utilizes increased curvature to provide consistent turf interactions and bunker performance.
The tail edge of the reverse C can relieve the relief, thus keeping the rebound consistent as the golfer manipulates the face.
This grinding is perfect for golfers looking for a final fusion of stability and versatility.
“For the first time in my career, the MG5’s wedge lineup represents the closest range of grinding, shape, feeling and spinning things to one package I’ve seen in 45 years.”
Greg Cesario, Taylormade Wedge Master Craftsman
In addition to three standard bounce options, the MG5 series includes three additional grindings for golfers seeking professional performance.
HB mill
HB grinding is made for golfers with steep swings or works in soft conditions. Its high elastic design provides stability and forgiveness.
Meanwhile, the unique heel relief and tapered track edges can be versatile enough, and the wedges can quickly exit the turf without digging.
lb grinding
The LB grinding has minimal bounce and brings the front edge close to the ground. The modified C-Grind emphasizes this address orientation, especially when the face is in an open position.
The obvious bevel leading edge and the added inclination prevent leading edge digging. This grinding is perfect for golfers with shallow swings and who play in tight, firm conditions.
TW mill
TW Grind has been updated to reflect the tiger’s latest wish in the wedge. Compared to the original TW grinding, this grinding features an extra inclination and features a new frontier mix for added effective rebound and less heel relief.
“I’ve been a universal player throughout my career, and this has been reflected in my wedge setup. Over the years, I have specially honed the grated profiles that allow me to perform all the shots I need in all different conditions. The MG5 TW Grind grind allows me to do that.”
