Red Sox, Roma Anthony finally confirmed expansion

Red socks and outfielders Roman Anthony ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that an eight-year contract extension is being finalized, which will guarantee the 21-year-old $130mm. The deal will cover the 2026-33 season and include club options for the 2034 campaign. Between club options and a range of escalators, the deal costs up to 230mm. Anthony is represented by frontline athletes.

From a great performance perspective, the deal bought all six of Anthony’s original club-controlled season, plus two free agent years and had an option in the third free agent season. But if Anthony is in the top two in the Rookie of the Year vote, he will be served for a full year this season, so that means the deal will lock in three years of free agents in the fourth club option. It is presumably that some contracts have ended with him in the vote this year.

Regardless of the number of years of eliminating free agents, Sox now controls Anthony until 2034, what his 30-year-old season will be. Unless there is a future expansion or exit opportunity, he will still be able to become a free agent before the 31-year-old campaign and position him as another potential nine-digit contract.

Anthony’s deal is similar to the eight-year, $111mm extension Corbin Carroll Signed with D-Backs in January 2023. Both outfielders were seen as the sport’s highest prospect when they debuted at the age of 21. Both had immediate success and quickly signed an eight-year deal from their 22-year-old season.

And more.
