Padres acquires Mason Miller, JP Sears

10:26 am: San Diego is also sending minor league right Braden Nett,,,,, Henry Betz and Eduarniel Nunez Each Passan results in the A in the transaction.

10:03 am: Padres and A both agree to send the stars to trade in close proximity Mason Miller and left-handed JP Sears ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported, to San Diego. Top prospects Leo Passan added that the headlines were a four-person return for A. They will also receive three yet-to-be-named pitchers.

It will be one of the more amazing deals for the 2025 deadline. Miller is one of the sport’s most popular reliefists, the All-Star and No. 4 to vote last season in the U.S. Rookie of the Year. After this season, he has been in control for another four years. Meanwhile, De Vries is currently the fifth-ranked prospect of the entire sport of baseball’s latest rankings.

It also makes quite a stage for other Padres deals, and they’re always talking about the current Robert Suarez Yes Dylan stops In trade negotiations. Now or both can change hands in a deal that gets young talent at the same time and free up cap space for San Diego for upgrades in the left field, behind the section and/or on the bench. Miller and Sears are still in the pre-choice year, so revenues exceed the league’s minimum. Bob Nightengale of USA Today suggested that there is no current plan to make the Suarez deal, and that nothing should be explicitly ruled out, although Baseball Operations President AJ Preller is the helm of Padres. ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that Suarez and Scease are still under discussion.

Miller’s joining strengthens the San Diego bullpen, which is already a power (although, as mentioned earlier, can also lay the foundation for Suarez’s trade). San Diego’s rescuers averaged MLB best 2.97 this season and ranked fifth with 24.1% three-point shooting percentage.

Miller will offer a massive upgrade despite a fairly considerable pedestrian 3.76 ERA. From early May to early June, most of his troubles this year have been in a tough month. Since June 15, he has beaten 14 singles with 18 strikeouts and 4 walks, of course one of the most important bullpen arms in the game a year ago. Miller threw 136 2/3 major league innings and had a 3.16 ERA of 37.3% strikeout efficiency and a 10.2% walk rate. He has saved 48 games so far and won one game in his career with only six chances.

Of course, Miller’s bottom line results have these tools that align with the best arms in the sport. No one in baseball is harder than his average 101.1 mph four-seller throw, while Miller’s 20.4% swing rate is just 20.4% Josh Hard and Fernando Cruz The highest score for pitchers who pitched even 10 innings this season. His history goes back to 2024, with his opponent’s nearly 41% attitude keeping his walking rate below 10%. Even in an era when a power arsenal with quality bat missed abilities seemed to be in the breeding sport, the 6’5″ Miller was above the rest, almost himself.

Plus Miller is not eligible for arbitration – although he will be this winter – and has been controlled for four seasons, and the right-hander’s asking price is understandable. Paders repeatedly rejected calling for DeFries or the team that captures the highest prospect Ethan SalasBut San Diego eventually succumbed to get more than four seasons, arguably the game’s top relief and Sears – a respected guard department that can help him to consolidate his staff for more than three years.

Sears, 29, comes to A Ken Waldichuk and Louis Medina Send in a transaction Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino Go to Yankees. He is the only pitcher without significant damage (on both sides of the trade).

Although Sears is a pure back-end starter, he has always been the source of A’s competitive innings. The 5’11-inch Southpaw started 32 games in 2023 and 2024, and he won 22 mounds in 2025. This year’s 4.95 ERA is the highest in career, although just like teammates Luis SeverinoMore struggles are already at home, which is a hitter-friendly environment on Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. Sears has an ERA of 5.48, allowing 14 home runs in 47 2/3 innings at home, while 4.55 points and 9 round hair abilities on the road 63 1/3 innings.

The lefties have reached 4.58 ERA in the last 464 innings between Sears and A. At that time, his opponent had 20.1% and kept his walking rate at 6.7%. Sears pitched at 79.5 mph on his four partitions, averaging 83.4 mph per hour this year. He averaged five innings per game.

Sears now inserts a rotation group, including stop (currently), Nick Pivetta,,,,, Yu Darvish,,,,, Ryan Bergert and Randy Vasquez. Top launcher Michael King It’s been over two months, but is expected to return before the end of the season. At the end of the season, Stop and Kings are free agents.

San Diego has always wanted to re-sign the King, although that is not guaranteed. Next year, they will get Joe Musgrove Back from Tommy John’s surgery. The 2026 rotation is likely to include one of Musgrove, Pivetta, Darvish, Sears and Bergert/Vasquez/Stephen Kolekalthough the return of the King or the acquisition of other spinning weapons is obviously not excluded. Sears will add some good depth anyway and stay affordable. He has a pair of minor league options left, allowing the friar to give the brother a lot of flexibility through the composition of the employee.

A’s A is reluctant to move Miller, but San Diego’s willingness to include De Vries certainly pushed things to the edge. He is the best prospect for trade deadlines since Padres digs out their farm system Juan Soto Three years ago. Today’s former offices are often reluctant to separate from potential customers who have received positive review levels, but Padres, led by preller, is the most aggressive in baseball in the trade market.

Still only 18 years old, De Vries is a shortstop for a switch, although his youth is still successful in High-A. A more advanced and experienced opponent didn’t frustrate him. Despite being one of the youngest players in the league, he hit .245/.357/.410 (116 WRC+) but hit eight home runs and eight steals. In most reconnaissance reports, his raw power, especially produced plus markers, improves above-average results in most reconnaissance reports.

De Vries is listed at 6’2 inches and 183 pounds, and despite his age, he can still grow more and master more of the original power. Baseball America described him as a potential “core of major league clubs,” touting full-game entry from the left side of the plate and making heavier approaches from the right side, allowing him to enter the force more frequently. Fanggraphs’ Eric Longenhagen is better than his elite rankings on BA and MLB.com (he ranked third in the game), but only more bearish than his elite rankings relative to his Eric Longenhagen. The Fanggraphs report cites questions about his defensive abilities and some swing issues, saying De Vries is “only” the prospect of the top 40 or so in the game and makes him stronger than the superstar.

As with any prospect, the results are quite broad, but De Vries has a ceiling higher than most and he is expected to reach professionally at a rare young age, which gives A more control over A’s peak body season. A professional call in 2027 seems to work, and in the best case scenario, he can even make his debut by the end of next year. If De Vries gets injured or takes longer to get used to advanced pitching, that debut could return to 2028, but even so, he’s only 21-year-old season. In any case, when the range of possible outcomes is often seen as something between “above average shortstop” and “the superstar core of the team”, we are talking about one of the most important young talents of the game.

And more.
