Maple Leafs News & Rumors: The Flexibility of Danford Shines, Matthews Evolves & Treliving – Hockey Writer –

The Toronto Maple Leafs may have quieted offseason by sensational standards, but there are many plots entering the 2025-26 season. From rising prospects Ben Danford makes noise on the international stage to Auston Matthews’ potentially entering the era of leadership, the team seems to be entering a transitional, but promising phase.

Although General Manager (GM) Brad Treliving didn’t overhaul the lineup, his calculated action and hat-conscious plans hint at a method to be seen. With key issues still on the offensive identity of Marner after the team, the upcoming season could define the direction of the franchise in the coming years. Can Matthews adopt a broader leadership style?
Project 1: Danford of Maple Leafs is displayed in the world’s youth
Maple Leaf may have found a gem in Danford. The 6-foot-2 defensive player ranked 31st in the 2024 NHL Draft, standing out in the hockey Canada World Junior Summer Showcase in Minneapolis. According to a source close to the event, Danford is not only solid — he is the best player on the ice.
Described as “stable, smart, and impossible to ignore”, Danford not only holds a place for the Blue Line of the World Juniors in 2026, but also makes reasons for the long-term and long-term rise within the Maple Leaf organization. Under pressure, his ability to break up the game, transition quickly and show balance is being praised by the Boy Scouts and the coach.

Danford, who has been appointed as the captain of the Oshawa General for the upcoming Ontario Hockey League (OHL) season, has also benefited from guidance in the Maple Leaf system, including advice from veterans such as Mark Giordano. If this trajectory continues, Toronto fans may not have to wait long to see the blue and white Danford.
Item 2: Treliving’s cap management and depth addition
In a quiet offseason, Matthew Knies and John Tavares’ expansion is arguably the best commercial treliving stands out. Both players can seek more or longer money elsewhere, but their deals give Toronto a cost certainty and flexibility. Tavares, in particular, expressed his firm commitment to the team’s new direction later in his career with a team-friendly contract. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers are part of the team’s long-term core and locking him up early will help keep Toronto’s top six competitive.

In addition to these expansions, the team also added some grit and depth to the lineup. Nicolas Roy was acquired by Marner trade to anchor the third row, while Dakota Joshua and Michael Pezzetta raised the body’s championship to hexagon. In the top six, Treliving has calculated risks to Matias MacCelli, hoping he can provide a secondary offense. Still, the jury was about whether Joshua’s $3.25 million cap was too expensive, and McClelley was unlikely to replace Manner’s creativity. Even though Marner’s departure released the hat room, the team was mostly limited to patchwork improvements – at least that’s the early look.
The third item: Maple Leaf goalkeeper is stable, but fragile?
At first glance, goalkeepers are not an area of concern. Anthony Stolarz shows when he is healthy that he can be one of the better alternatives in the league. Joseph Woll, who is still developing, has the potential to be a strong starter and can develop further. Together they form a paper series. However, both have an injury history that has caused some concerns, especially if either player misses the extended season.

Matt Murray’s departure cleared the crease logjam, but the team may still be a goalkeeper. Dennis Hildeby seems not ready for a regular role in the NHL, nor the senior third-string option to wait in the wings. If injured again, the team may scramble to seek help. While this is not a crisis, does it indicate that Toronto may benefit from finding veterans who can pass the waiver and prepare in the American Hockey League (AHL)?
Project 4: Can Matthews grow into a Toronto leader without Mana?
Matthews remains one of the top goalscorers in the NHL, but the issues continue to have an overall impact, especially in leadership. Some fans think he is the second best player in the world after Connor McDavid. Others aren’t quite sure, pointing to Nathan Mackinnon, Leon Draisaitl or Nikita Kucherov, whose playoff consistency and emotional engagement seem to outweigh what Matthews showed in Toronto.

His quiet presence and lack of visible fires did not help his public view during a critical playoff moment. Now, with Marner gone, Matthews entered strange territory. He no longer paired with his long-term set man (on ice and on ice), he might be forced to evolve, not just his score, but in his way of leading. This could become a turning point in his leadership growth.
This may be exactly what Matthews does to take the next step of this change. With less distractions and no automated chemistry, he can fully possess his own lines, the sound of the locker room and his role as the cornerstone of the Toronto franchise. If we see another Matthews in 2025-26, don’t be surprised: a man who is not only an elite, but also a commander.
What’s next for maple leaves?
If there is one benefit to Toronto’s quiet offseason, it’s the flexibility it brings to the next one. Several additional contracts this summer are short-term, and the team keeps its books clean enough to remain agile in the future. By design it seems. Treliving didn’t make the team with a long-term bet, which offered him the option if the current core didn’t take a step forward.

At the same time, maple leaves must monitor their depth. David Kämpf and Calle Järnkrok can move within the season if the window is opened, but it depends on the injured luck of other teams and the willingness of Toronto to replace them from within. If the first six products and defenses are established, the 2025-26 season could be the actual pivot point.
For now, the team looks harder and more responsible, but it is not better. This may be enough to keep the window open. There may still be action.
