Former USMNT star Eric Wynalda says LAFC and Cherundolo will be a disaster for Gio Reyna

Former U.S. forward Eric Wynalda said Gio Reyna’s return to major league football will be a disaster due to the lack of tough competition at home.

After another injury-impaired season, Reyner’s future at Dortmund is uncertain, limiting him to only 341 minutes in the Bundesliga.

The move to Italy failed to achieve Parma, which prompted him to return to the United States and play for the LAFC.

According to Wynalda, this will reduce his threat to USMNT, which desperately needs the 22-year-old to regain his magic before next summer’s World Cup final.

History tells us about the competitive advantage of MLS Dulls – Wynalda

“I’m worried about Gio Reyna. I don’t think going back to LAFC and playing for Steve Cherundolo would help,” he said on his release with Eric Wynalda.

Wynalda noted that MLS had previously tried to bring US international players back, which led to a decline in performance, adding: “Let’s remember the idea of bringing Michael Bradley back to Jozy Altidore.

“They also brought Clint Dempsey back to Seattle. They paid him $6 million a year! That was 2014.

“What happened to our national team three years later in the league? We are not qualified and you can’t put it together?

“Michael Bradley, Dempsey and Jozy Altidore can’t find a way to qualify against Trinidad? Is Christian Pulisic trying to pick up the debris and do something when he was young?

“This is when you come back and prepare for the World Cup game. That’s what you get. You’re not competing in the World Cup environment. The end of the story. It’s not a point of view. It’s the fact.”

Wynalda Slates “Bored” Cherundolo

The LAFC is also associated with the moves of Captain Tottenham’s son Heung-Min, but Wynalda is not sure Cherundolo can get the best results from the players.

“Cherundolo is someone I’ve known for a long time. He’s bored. He hates the media. He won’t inspire anyone to do anything before the World Cup,” Wynalda said.

“Sorry, if that hurts your relationship, but he is not the answer. He is not the answer as a national team coach, he is probably back to Germany.”
