Twins designated Matt Canterino for assignment

Twins designated right-handed Matt Cantrino For homework, Phil Miller of the Minnesota Star Tribune reported. That is the corresponding move of the prospect of opening up the 40-person position Luke Keaschallyesterday's promotion. Receiver/Infielder Mickey Gasper Has been selected as Triple-A Saint Paul, opening an active roster for Keaschall.

Canterino, 27, underwent end-of-season shoulder surgery about a month ago. Injured players are not allowed to give up completely. Unless there are some clubs out there who want to trade Cantrino, he will release the waiver in the coming days.

Recent surgeries are just the latest in a range of health issues that derail Cantrino’s trajectory. Once upon a time, he was a very promising prospect. The twins chose him in the second round of the 2019 draft. He then scored an average of 1.44 in the first 25 innings.

In the following years, he didn't pitch much. The 2020 minor league season was canceled by the pandemic. Canterino hit 23 innings with a 0.78 ERA in 2021 and 37 innings in 2022, with an ERA of 1.95 ERA and struggling with ongoing elbow issues. He eventually underwent surgery by Tommy John in August 2022.

The talent was enough to keep the twins from wanting him to the Rule 5 Draft, so he got a 40-man roster in November 2022. He then missed all of his time in 2023 while recovering from his surgery. The 2024 return seems possible until the shoulder problem causes him to retreat. As mentioned earlier, these shoulder problems ended up having surgery about a month ago.

At this point, Canterino has never played any official game moves since the summer of 2022 and he won't be returning anytime soon. These numbers are good, including huge strikeouts, but the health issues are so great that the twins are forgiven for their hopes for his future.

Sometimes, in this case, the player will be released and then rejoin his club through a minor league trade. The twins may be interested in this situation because they can leave Cantrino without giving him a roster. However, he will have the ability to talk to the other 29 teams before signing the new agreement.
