Kevin Herget elects free agent

Right-handed Kevin Herget Free agents have been elected in lieu of taking direct missions from Triple-A Gwinnett, according to his transaction tracker on MLB.com. This shows that he cleared the waiver after being designated as an assignment by the Brave last week.

Herget, 34, was exempted from the Mets in May. Since then, he has been primarily engaged in optional tasks, making appearances in Atlanta only. It was a July 1st inning, and he was selected to return to Gwennet. The Mets asked him to exempt the winemaker from the offseason and gave him similar treatment. They mostly hid him among minors and put him in a major league game only before he was assigned to the mission.

Since he had been completely unveiled in his previous career, Heg has the right to refuse direct missions and exercise this right. He has accounted for 45 major league innings this year and in the first three seasons. At that time, he averaged 4.53 running, 13.9% strikeout, 5.7% walking and 35.9% ground ball rate.

His minor league job has performed well this year. Between Syracuse and Gwinnett, he logged in 30 1/3 innings with a 3.26 ERA. His 21.6% strikeout rate, 8% walk rate and 41.6% ground ball rate are all close to typical averages.

He will head to the open market to see what he is waiting for his opportunity. Since he cleared the waiver, he might be limited to minor league offers. If he ends up returning to the profession with a team, he can be selected for the rest of the season but will no longer be selected in 2026.
