Host: “I would say that Mike Matheson’s fan base was very separate during the Habs regular season. There were a lot of people seeing his worth. Many believe that when he was hovering around 24, 25, 26 minutes. There weren’t many choices in the class outside his weight, but when he was on the useful NHL Defensems, they didn’t have many choices.
But now, with Dobson’s acquisition, you have to think their former fifth pick, David Reinbacher, is likely to be closer to the NHL than ever before. Most people would imagine it would be October this year.
Mike Matheson has a year left in the deal. Have you seen Canadians and Mike Matheson agree to want team-friendly things? Or do you think he might be the bargaining chip, maybe who, Wing’s second-line center package or what else might be? ”
NHL Rumors: Latest News About Patrick Lane and Montreal Canadians
Jim Biringer: “Yes, I think he’s definitely playing the game. I think that in terms of Mike Matheson, all the choices have to be on the table. Like you said, he’s in a weightlifting game and is a steady defender for him. He’s a steady defender. He played his game last year. Argument.
And I think the same thing will happen on Matheson this year in Montreal. I think all choices have to be on the table when it comes to him because again, his defense against you is a steady piece. I’m going to go back to this and I’m going to bring the (new) jersey here for a minute, because everyone you know wants to choose (Dougie) Hamilton etc. Well, do you want boys and young defensive players to play in weight classes when you try to make the playoffs consistently?
Unless you get a valuable return, make veterans like Mike Matheson as valuable as (Patrik) Laine. If you’re going to get a second line center, if you’re going to get a winger, a scoring winger, that’s great, but sometimes it’s better to keep what you have as we’ve seen in free agent classes, and a lot of people stay at home because of their value to the team.
I think if you can get Matheson through a team-friendly deal, it’s a win for both sides. ”
nhlrumors.com Note: While the Montreal Canadaens is indeed Noah Dobson obtained from New York Island, he is a right-handed shot. These players are valuable. Mike Matheson is a left-beater, and although a new deal for Kaiden Guhle is starting, is he ready to pair his first-class time with Dobson?
Getting a veteran back there will help stabilize the defense. Plus, he’s a good locker room guy. Montreal has a deep pipeline, but adding minutes of meetings for players who are not ready for the NHL will hurt a Canadiens who need to improve their defense this season.
NHL Rumor: NHL Trade Activity is expected to slow down
With Canadians hoping to build on short-term contracts last year, it makes more sense to keep Matheson in short-term contracts. Remember, this is the year Montreal was supposed to be in the playoffs. Expect them to be there again. It would be a long way to get Matheson back.
