Yesterday in the history of hockey: July 7

Tomorrow in the history of hockey: July 9

This date was 1995 and it turns out that the National Hockey League’s annual admission draft and the usual deals associated with it are very engaging. Over the years, it also saw some experienced players eventually entering new places and successful coaches earned their first jobs in the league. This time machine was fired and ready to take us on a daily trip over the past few decades.

A busy day in 1995

Due to the late start and end of the 1994-95 season due to the speed of the lockdown, the NHL entry draft was much later than usual on July 8, 1995. 26 NHL teams gathered at Edmonton in AB and participated in the nine-round draft.

A series of actions

There are a lot of actions before the draft begins, team swap players and draft picks. The biggest deal was that the Vancouver Canucks won Alexander Mogilny from the Buffalo Saber in exchange for Mike Peca, Mike Wilson and their first-round draft pick.

Mogilny scored 55 goals and 107 points in his first season with Canucks, but his number dropped. In 312 games, he was eventually traded to the New Jersey Devils in 2000, for Brendan Morrison and Dennis Pederson.

Moligny was traded to Canucks in 1995.

PECA continued to play 363 games for the Saber, scoring 96 goals and 217 points. Wilson was a defensive player who made his NHL debut in the 1995-96 season and played 231 games in Buffalo before being traded to the Florida Panthers in 1999 as the draft pick turned into Ryan Miller. Draft draft obtained from the Canucks (14Th Overall) was used to take Jay McKee, who played for 10 seasons at the Buffalo Blue Line.

The same day, the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired experienced defensive player Larry Murphy from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Dmitri Mironov and secured a second-round draft pick in the 1996 NHL entry method.

Murphy scored 19 goals and 100 points for the Maple Leafs in 151 games before being traded to the Detroit Red Wings in the 1996-97 season. Mironov played 87 games for the Penguins. He was traded by him in November 1996 with a powerful duck deal with Anaheim. The second round draft pick was eventually traded to the Devil and used by Josh Dewolf, who never played in an NHL game.

St. Louis Blues also signed experienced center Dale Hawerchuk on this date after spending his first five seasons with the Sabres. Future Hall of Famers scored 13 goals and 41 points in 66 games before being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers by Craig Mactavish on March 15, 1996.

A series of defenders

When the actual draft begins, the first three draft picks are used for the defenders. The Ottawa Senator chose Bryan Berard, who joined Brian Lawton (1983) and Mike Modano (1988), was the only American-born player to choose with the first overall draft pick. New York Islanders drafted Wade Redden before Aki Berg headed for the Los Angeles Kings in third place.

The first two draft picks, Berard and Redden, never played for the team they drafted. After refusing to sign with Ottawa, the Senators traded Berard in January 1996, with Don Beaupre and Martin Straka dealing for Redden and Damian Rhodes.

Berard went on to win the Calder trophy because he was the top rookie in the league after the 1996-97 season. Eventually, he was traded to the Maple Leafs in 1999 for goalkeeper Felix Potvin. Redden has been a ten-year fixture on the Senator’s Blue Line, playing 838 games in Ottawa’s 1023 Professional NHL game.

Other notable first-round draft picks in 1995 include Shane Doan (7th, Winnipeg Jets), Jarome Iginla (11th, Dallas Stars), Jean-Sebastien Giguere (13th, Hartford Whalers), Petr Sykora (18th, Devils) and Brian Boucher (Brian Boucher (22))NDflyer).

Odd number and ending

On July 8, 1988, the Boston Bruins signed free agent Garry Galley, who played for the Washington Capitals last season. He played 257 games for the Bruins, scoring 24 goals and 106 points from the back end. In January 1992, he was sent to the flyer along with Wes Walz and a third-round draft pick, Gord Murphy, Brian Dobbin and a pair of transit draft picks.

Ed Olczyk signed with the Kings on July 8, 1996. Los Angeles is the fifth of six different teams he played for in the NHL career in the 16th season. Olczyk’s tenure with the Kings lasted only 67 games, where he scored 21 goals and 44 points. At the 1997 trade deadline, he was moved to Penguin and sent to Glen Murray.

The Rangers signed Theoren Fleury to a three-year, $21 million contract and won the fourth year option on July 8, 1999. The outspoken winger scored just 15 goals in his first season with the Rangers, trying to reach maximum pressure.

Fleury rebounded in the 2000-01 season. He led the team to score and ranked fourth in the league with 74 points and 62 games. But his season ended when he entered the league’s drug abuse program. In his final season with the Rangers, he scored 24 goals and 63 points, and there was a lot of controversy in this game. The team did not exercise their options and traded Fleury to the Sharks for a sixth round pick.
