MLB Mailbag: Brave, Bear, Sasakie, Angel, Volpe

The mailbags this week are a bit hybrid. MLBTR founder Tim Dierkes handled the first question, while Anthony Franco came up with the last few questions. We’ll be entering the Braves’ playoff chances, the Cubs’ trade possibilities, Roki Sasaki’s disappointing debut, a few Bubble team deadlines and more!

Kevin asked:

Should the brave try to rebuild, continue to develop and develop new philosophical drafts from some of the underperforming cores? Maybe pick some batsmen?

Philip asked:

I’m a brave fan, win or lose, and I watch them every night. This season and their season winning the World Series are two different entities. Why don’t the Brave trade Raisel Iglesias and Marcell Ozuna? I mean we have a lot of weaknesses, we have 3 starting pitchers, the baseball roster is the worst, and our relief guys are the worst in baseball. What can we get for Ozuna and Iglesias?

It is worth considering that the 2021 Warriors have a playoff odds of 30-35 at 6-16-21. In the 7-2-21 game, the chances of the playoffs reached 20.6%, rising to 40-41. The current team is worse at 38-46, but still has a 17.2% chance in the playoffs. It’s no different from the team that once won.

Still, the Braves had 7.5 games in the wildcard. They performed like a 73-win team. To shoot in the playoffs, they need to play a team that is more like a 100-win team. I’m here to be the Braves fans on the side of the playoffs than in the Fangraphs. These guys wrote before the news Spencer Schwellenbach Injuried.

Ozuna, 34, has experienced a power outage this year. However, his expected hit rate is .487 and his actual .392 score is .487, and I think he will be fine. He is DH rent for 16mm, so my guess is that he will bring prospects for 40th grade. Iglesias is 35 years old and makes the same money. His speed and strikeout rate are falling and somehow 18.4% of his flying balls left the yard. I think he will be a pure salary.

So while I don’t think the Braves will make the playoffs, I don’t think they restored the farm system by trading Ozuna and Iglesias.

As for Kevin’s question, let’s make a micro-evaluation of the Brave’s core and in the 2026 brackets for the player. Excluding the money owed in 2025.
