Dombrowski: Phillies focus on bullpen help

The Phillies entered the deadline as a clear buyer, sitting on NL East with a record of 47-32, the third best record in any club in the game. It’s a familiar debate, but baseball business president Dave Dombrowski made it clear this week in an interview with El Extrabase’s Daniel Alvarez Montes and track and field’s Jayson Stark that his focus is on adding bullpens.
“It’s so nice to have our starting pitch,” Dombrowski told Alvarez Montes. “when [Bryce] Harper Back, our lineup was in good shape at that time. The bullpen may be our biggest focus. ”
Dombrowski offers a similar view in his chat with Stark and Podcast co-host Doug Glanville, though he expands the scope further. While Philes obviously needs some relief, the long-term head of baseball action reminds left-handed José Alvarado The end of the regular season will come back, which will promote the team’s bullpen. Alvarado is not eligible for this year’s playoffs as he is serving 80-game PED ban, but Dombrowski notes that his club will likely transfer its self-proclaimed multiple spins into the playoffs “pen” like one of his previous teams – the 2018 Red Sox did a great job when inserted Nathan Eovaldi and David Price Enter the playoffs bullpen.
That’s not to say that the Phillies aren’t going out to add cowshed arms (even two). When his team needs it, Dombrowski is not direct, even if it is not aggressive. He stressed that Stark and Glanville, winning opportunities only appear often and should not be taken for granted, even if it means “you may give up more than you would otherwise want.”

Dombrowski returns to his 2022 right deal Ben Brown Go to Chicago in exchange for David Robertson As an example of this, pointing out that it is a painful decision, a major league roster that he considers strong pitching depth in the system and able to play in-depth playoffs. Brown, then 22, was named the seventh place in the Phillies of Baseball America and was ready for a bump from High-A to Double-A. Robertson was purely rent, but in a great rebounding season with the Cubs. He continued to work hard for Phils’ games and playoffs. Less than two years after the deal, Brown was professional. He struggled in 2025 (picked yesterday), but pitched to Chicago last year and is still considered a viable long-term member of the pitcher.
Phillies’ rescuers are currently ranked 25th in the Grand Slam with a 4.63 ERA. They are slightly better in terms of FIP (4.24, 22nd) and Siera (3.78, 15th). The Philadelphia Bullpen strikes out at 22.2%, which matches the rescue team’s 22.4% league average, with its 8.8% walking rate well below the 9.4% league average. However, the group is too easy to get home runs overall, sitting 1.29 hours/9 points, the second-worst mark in the Grand Slam.

Taiwan Walkermoving from spin to bullpen, showed outstanding flashes – for example, he threw a three-in-one-hit inning and fanned seven-rays in a relief in May – but has been inconsistent and stumbled so far.
Stark did touch on other topics with Dombrowski, especially wondering if the Phillies might be willing to return Harper to the outfield if there is a chance to get a first baseman hit by a right hand. The Phillies president refused to speak absolutely, but said he strongly preferred not to do so, citing Harper’s defensive acumen at first base. From a more general perspective, Dombrowski downplayed the possibility of adding a bat in any capacity, pointing to previous trade deadlines where he promoted a player from the farm rather than making an external acquisition. 25 years old Otto KempPrior to his recent promotion to professional, he reached .313/.416/.594 in Triple-A, currently being viewed and specifically mentioned by Dombrowski.
Dombrowski also speaks in a broad way about what he wants to resign Kyle Schwarber and JT Realmuto After the season, both have been awarded free agents this winter. Phillies fans in particular will want to check out two interviews, which took place in about six minutes (Alvarez Montes) and 30 minutes (Stark/Glanville).
