Midwest Bird Festival has arrived at the 2025 PGA Tour calendar.
After hammering three signature games and two major titles over the past seven weeks, players can breathe easily here with ease, then we cross the pond and prepare for open championships and home games this season. Next week, it’s John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois, but our first stop is at the Detroit Golf Club Motor City, which will be the seventh edition of Rocket Classic.
Many of the top stars of the game took some time as the schedule fell, but Collin Morikawa was here with last week’s champion Keegan Bradley and defending champion Patrick Cantlay, who had won twice in Detroit.
The Detroit Golf Club is a classic Parkland-style course designed by legendary Donald Ross 100 years ago. By Tour standards, it is relatively short in size, with its size being less than 7,400 yards. The fairways are tree-shaded, but not particularly narrow, and are punished by rough borders rather than cruelty. In the classic Ross style, the green green has a shaved runoff area with some undulations, tilted from back to front, and is a Bentgrass/POA Annua mixture.
The big hitters have won here in the past – Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau, and as mentioned, Davis did it twice. The bomber doesn’t have much fines to bomb. From here, wedge playback and placement often constitute a successful recipe. I looked at the strokes: I drove the tee, drove the distance, got good driving force, got speed: approach, holes close to 75-150 yards, and got strokes: Place: Place (bend/POA).

I believe next week’s location TPC Deere Run is similar to Detroit Golf Club. I think the TPC Twins, which will be seen immediately after a trip overseas, will be a related course I think. I also checked out TPC Craig Ranch (Byron Nelson), Silverado (Procore Championship) in Napa, Royal Liverpool (host of the 2023 Open Championship) and Hamilton Golf and Country Club (host of the 2019 and 2024 Canadian RBC Canadian RBC Open).
Four of our five options last week delivered the finishing spot for us, but it has been two months since we won the championship completely. Let’s see if we can change this week.
Cameron Young (27-1)
I’ve always been reluctant to support Young, and many have had a lot lately, but that’s probably the right place – on the watering field, he’s back to form and a golf course that really suits his game. In the past, he was ranked sixth here and of course the runner-up, and he has done it seven times in his career as “Oh, so close.” We mentioned the tour over the past seven weeks. During this match, Young finished three top 10s at the Truist Championships, the RBC Canadian Open and three weeks ago at the U.S. Open. Young ranked sixth in the John Deere Classic and eighth in 2023 at Royal Liverpool. He ranks fifth in this field and has finished fifth in the last 24 rounds.
Davis Thompson (40-1)
Thompson made our card last week and he won the very respected 25th place. Last week, he also ranked third in SG: Approach. He has played for a long time and has finished second in Detroit, top 10 in Napa and will be the defending champion of John Deere next week. Thompson is hot this season of the year after another Donald Ross designed Pinehurst, ranked ninth in the Pinehurst Open at the Pinehurst. He can be ready to reach his peak again.

Stephen Jaeger (70-1)
Another big hitter who has been successful in this game in the past, finished ninth and fifth. He made a bunch of birdies, and his putting has improved significantly in recent years and is now ranked 29th for SG: Putting (Bent/POA) in the last 24 rounds. Jaeger missed only one layoff in three months, which is very forgiving because it was in Oakmont. Last week in Travelers, he ranked 15th in SG: Advance and 22nd place SG:PUTTING.
Emiliano Grillo (80-1)
Grillo ranked number one on my board when I misunderstood the statistics this week. He has ranked 17th in this field and 17th round on the tee in the past 24 rounds. He ranks first in SG: proximity, and is very huge in the holes anywhere between 75-150 yards. He won Silverado, finished second in the John Deere Classic and the 3m Open, and he finished sixth in Royal Liverpool in 2023.
Chris Kirk (80-1)
Speaking of the U.S. Open, Kirk ranked 12th in Oakmont three weeks ago. This caught my attention, plus he was a huge wedge player with 75-150 yards. He finished in three top 20 games in Detroit and finished in five top 30 in seven appearances with John Deere.
Victor Perez (87-1)
Like Grillo and Kirk, Perez also performed well at the U.S. Open. He finished 19th in SG: Advance and ranked ninth in the field. He finished ninth in the Canadian Open a week ago, and he also ranked third at Hamilton Golf and Country Club last year. He has been ranked ninth in this field over the last 24 rounds, gaining a good drive with SG: Goals and Sixth. He is SG’s 35th place: Put (Bend/POA)
