Welcome to the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., this par-71 windsurfing resort sits on the Atlantic coast and is relatively short at just under 6,900 yards. This will be the seventh tournament hosted by the golf course and the sixth of seven FedExCup fall events, leaving only the RSM Classic in Georgia, USA, next week.
As was the case last week in Los Cabos, Mexico, there were 120 players on hand and 36 holes to advance. The window has narrowed as there are now only two events left for players to break into the top 100 in the FedExCup standings or avoid falling out of the top 100. To qualify for full PGA Tour status in 2026, you must find your spot at the end of the FedEx Cup fall season.

One could easily conclude that the greens here are bermudagrass. They have a large putting surface and can run very slowly due to the wind. The fairways are average in width and have few edges, but there are many bunkers to negotiate, emphasizing accuracy, especially in strong winds. This isn’t necessarily a Bomber course, but having some length off the tee would be an advantage in windy conditions.
We haven’t always seen wind in the last six Bermuda Championships, but it looks like we will see it this week. Speeds are expected to be between 15 and 30 mph over the four days.
I looked at the scores gained: off the tee and on approach. I looked at good drives gained, scrambles and strokes gained: Putts (Bermuda grass). I also use a hole approach of 100-150 yards. Ideally, we want a good golfer who is sharp with both his wedge and short game. Also, did we mention the wind? Yeah, it also makes me lean toward players with lower ball flight and those who show separation in those situations.
This week has been a bit complicated for me as far as related courses go. I saw Pebble Beach, Waiale Country Club (Sony Open), Sea Island (RSM Classic), PGA National (Cognizant Classic) and TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. Our specialties here are Bermuda grass in most conditions, coastal locations and/or windy conditions, tendencies toward accuracy, shorter routes, and routes where crawling is crucial.
Matt Wallace(35-1)
The Briton has excelled on the coast in the past, winning at Corrales Punta Cana in 2023, and has also performed well at a number of other events that have historically seen windy conditions around the world. He’s been playing a lot on tour lately and trying to maintain his top-100 status, so he’s motivated to keep it up. He’s one of the best players on the field for yards from scrimmage between 125 and 150 and ranks fifth in the last 24 scrimmages.
Vince Whaley (36-1)
Whaley is currently ranked 101st in the FedExCup standings, so he has every reason to maintain his current form and promotion streak that has lasted seven months. He has finished fifth and eighth here in the past, as well as a top-10 finish at Island Race and a top-20 finish at Sony and TPC Summerlin. These results are likely related to one of Whaley’s low ball flights on tour. Over the past 24 rounds, he ranks 10th in Faceoff and ninth in SG: Putting (Bermuda Grass).
Eric Cole (40-1)
We know Cole has a great short game and is one of the best players in the field with attack and wedges, and we all know he lost in a playoff at the 2023 Cognizant Classic. That same season, he finished third at both the RSM Classic and the Las Vegas Shriners Tournament. Earlier this year he finished fifth at the Sony Open in Waialae. His current form is there, with two top-10 finishes in his past three starts.

Victor Perez (45-1)
The Frenchman currently ranks 109th in the FedEx Cup standings. He finished 21st last week, ranking in the top 20 in driving distance, regulation greens and rushing. He has two top-20 finishes at PGA National, where he ranks 16th in SG: Approach and 24th in SG: Putting (Bermuda Grass) over the past 24 rounds. It’s also worth noting that Perez has one of the low ball flights on Tour and won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, an event that is no stranger to high winds.
Kanaya Takumi(60-1)
Kanaya is one of the higher-ranked players in my stats this week, as he ranks 11th in steals, sixth in hole approaches 100-125 yards, and first in good drives gained over the past 24 rounds. Kanaya had a top-five finish four weeks ago while trying to make the PGA Tour full-time. He has 10 international wins in his career.
Ben Coles (110-1)
I’m going back to Ben Coles again at triple-digit odds this week because he still makes sense in my opinion. Over the past 24 rounds, he ranks first in SG: Approach. He ranked in the top 10 in “getting good tee shots” and “100-125 yards to the hole.” He never missed a cut at Sony in Bermuda or Hawaii and finished fifth at the RSM Classic in 2023. Like Willie, Perez and Canaya, Kollers also possesses a particularly low ball flight.
