Last season, 49 people ran back Christian McCaffrey missed 13 games due to injury. His backup rate was relatively healthy during the offseason, but his backups have been on the injury report. That’s why San Francisco’s deal with the Commander to acquire RB Brian Robinson Jr. Washington in the process won a 2026 sixth round pick. Now, Robinson will play as a member of the 49ers as the final year of his rookie deal.

In the third round pick at the 2022 NFL Draft, the commander picked Brian Robinson Jr. from Alabama. In three seasons in Washington, Robinson played 41 games and played 37 games. In 2024, he played in the Commander’s 17 regular season games. He started 13 times, scoring 187 times for a total of 799 yards and eight rushing touchdowns. But Washington has young RB talents and they are willing to move on.
That’s why Brian Robinson Jr. was traded to 49 people over the weekend. Robinson will be a backup in San Francisco after becoming a full-time starter in the past two seasons. Christian McCaffrey is healthy before the 2025 season. However, it is always possible that he misses time due to injury. If that happens, the Commander has a high-quality backup in Brian Robinson Jr.

The 26-year-old RB will enter the final season of his rookie contract. Robinson will make $2.2 million in the 2025 season. If the 49ers don’t offer him a postponement this season, Robinson will be an unrestricted free agent. Isaac Guerendo will be McCaffrey’s substitute in 2025 before the 49ers acquire Robinson.
Brian Robinson Jr. did not compete in the final preseason game in Washington. This marks the end of his time with commnaders. Not long after, he was traded to the 49ers. Sources said the commander was shopping for Robinson throughout August and ended up reaching a deal with San Francisco. The 49ers opened the 2025 season in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.
