3 takeaways from the Avalanche’s 3-2 loss to the Bruins – The Hockey Writers – Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche will look to bounce back against the recently struggling Boston Bruins after losing 5-4 to the Carolina Hurricanes. The Bruins, a shell of their former glory, had lost their past six games heading into this one.

Scott Wedgewood will score No. 9th The Avalanche struggled to get past Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman all game long. For the second time in a row — and the first time in the regular season — the Avalanche found themselves on the losing side, falling 3-2.

Scott Wedgwood needs help

Scott Wedgewood has struggled in the last two games. He allowed four goals in the first period against the Hurricanes and had to be benched. He allowed three goals on just 16 shots against the Bruins on Saturday.

This is not a criticism of Wedgwood. He was a backup who had to take over the starting job when Mackenzie Blackwood was sidelined with an injury. It’s rare in today’s NHL for a player to start so many games in a row, but the Avalanche have been capitalizing on Blackwood’s hot streak while waiting for his return.

It was obvious that he needed a break now. Riding with Trent Miner for a game or two isn’t the end of the world and should give Wedgewood a chance to rest, refresh and focus on the next game.

Game of Thrones is indeed worrying

The Avalanche’s power play should be one of the most explosive in the league. However, we’re nine games into this and this is one of the worst teams in the league. How we got to this point is puzzling, but it’s clear that this unit is a problem.

The Avalanche went 0-for-3 from the field on Saturday and improved to 4-for-37 on the season. Those 37 chances ranked third in the league; their four goals on the man advantage were tied for fifth-worst in the league. Their success rate is 10.8% 30th The same is true in the league.

It’s hard to say what needs to happen. Despite having so many talented, offensively creative players on the team, they just can’t seem to find their groove and create the high-danger chances they deserve. This issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible as it could cost them a few games in the long run.

To be fair: Jeremy Silverman stole the game

While Artturi Lehkonen seemed to have an answer with two goals on the night, the Avalanche struggled to solve Jeremy Swayman’s problem. Although Swayman has struggled since signing a huge contract extension almost a year ago, he was locked in on Saturday.

Swayman made 31 of 33 shots and held off the Avalanche’s third-quarter offense. Considering the Bruins only had four shots in the third quarter, they really needed him to hold the line.

This happens in the NHL. You can’t “guard” 82 nights a year, and sometimes you get a goalkeeper who just won’t let up. That was the case on Saturday. The Avalanche beat the Bruins, but Swayman was the biggest difference.

Next is the devil

The Avalanche are too good a team to let this team stay. While the loss to a team in the bottom half of the table was disappointing, the turnaround was quick. The Avalanche will face the New Jersey Devils on Sunday afternoon before heading home to face the Devils on Tuesday night.
