Jannik Sinner started his Erste Bank Open campaign in stunning fashion on Wednesday, recording his fastest win of 2025 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Daniel Altmaier.
The top seed and 2023 Vienna champion overwhelmed Altmaier from the start with strong groundstrokes and a powerful pace, charging to the finish line in just 58 minutes. Sinner was forced to withdraw in the third round of his title defense in Shanghai earlier this month, extending his winning streak to 17 games on indoor hard courts.

“I thought everything went really well in the first set,” Sinner said. “On indoor courts you have to be very careful. If your opponent is serving well, it’s difficult to break. But I’m really happy with my performance today, to start the match in a very positive way, not only match-wise but feeling wise.”
Sinner’s last fastest win of the season came in Cincinnati’s opener, blitzing Daniel Elahi Garland in 59 minutes. At the ATP 500 event in Vienna, the 24-year-old Italian hit 19 winners, made only seven unforced errors and faced no break points, according to Infosys ATP statistics.
Sinner, who improved to 29-0 in first-round matches since Cincinnati 2023, will next face fellow countryman Flavio Cobolli, who defeated Tomas Machac 7-6(6), 6-2.
Almaty champion Daniil Medvedev defeated Nuno Borges 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-2 last week to continue his bid for the Nitto ATP Finals at the end of the season. After conceding two match points in the second-set tie-break, Medvedev rallied in impressive fashion to begin his title bid in Vienna, where he last lifted the trophy in 2022.
The former Nitto ATP Finals champion heads to Turin ranked 13th at the PIF ATP Live event and could face eighth-ranked Lorenzo Musetti in a blockbuster quarter-final in Vienna. First, Medvedev will face Corentin Mutai in the Almaty final, who had previously easily defeated qualifier Damir Zuhur 6-3, 6-0.
2019 Vienna semifinalist Matteo Berrettini beat Alexei Popyrin 7-6(5), 6-3 in Wednesday’s midfield match. Cameron Norrie is the impediment to the Italian’s fourth consecutive ATP 500 quarter-final appearance as he leads the Lexus ATP Head2Head series 2-0.
Tallon Griekspoor became the first player to reach the quarterfinals in Vienna with a crucial 7-6(4), 7-6(2) victory over Brandon Nakashima. He waits for second-seeded Alexander Zverev or qualifier Matteo Anaaldi.
